TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia's Minister of Law and Human Rights Natalius Pigai has stated that the Ministry of Communication and Digital should not report the Chair of the Ummat Party's Consultative Assembly, Amien Rais, to the police regarding a statement in his video. In the video uploaded on YouTube, Amien stated that the relationship between the Cabinet Secretary Teddy Indra Wijaya and President Prabowo Subianto had crossed professional boundaries. The video was later deleted.
Pigai emphasized that the state should not imprison its people, including Amien Rais. "As the Minister of Law and Human Rights, I request the Ministry of Communication and Digital not to take a position to report Amien Rais, because he is a part of the state," he said at a press conference in his office on Monday, May 4, 2026.
Pigai mentioned that only Teddy has the right to bring the matter to the legal realm, as he considered Amien Rais' statement to be a personal attack. "As the Minister of Human Rights, as a representative of the government, I state that the state cannot imprison its people, including Amien Rais. Teddy can do so because this is an attack on an individual," stated Pigai.
He requested Amien Rais to apologize to Teddy, stating that Amien's statement was inappropriate and undignified.
Prior to this, the Minister of Communication and Digital, Meutya Hafid, ensured that her ministry would take appropriate measures in accordance with applicable laws. She stated that Amien Rais' video statement about Teddy contained a slanderous narrative and hate speech.
"The narrative constructed is an attempt to demean the highest leadership of the country, lacks factual basis, and is part of an effort to provoke public disturbances," said Minister Meutya Hafid through a written statement on Friday, May 1, 2026.
Meanwhile, Amien Rais emphasized that his statement in the video is part of the democratic rights guaranteed by the law. He claimed to have received information from various social media channels indicating something highly unusual about Teddy. "Regarding Teddy, I see there is something very unusual," he said during the Ummat Party National Conference in Yogyakarta on Saturday, May 2, 2026.
The former Speaker of the MPR viewed something unusual about Teddy due to the excessive power he perceived Teddy to have, to the extent of controlling access for guests and ministers who wanted to meet the President. "I see Teddy sticking too close to Mr. Prabowo, to the point that he determines which guests, which ministers, which generals get to meet Mr. Prabowo," he said.
Amien revealed that he had received complaints from a coordinating minister about Teddy's behavior. "The Coordinating Minister told me, 'Mr. Amien, sometimes I can't meet the President because according to Teddy, there is no time or the time is not yet there,'" Amien recounted. However, at that time, Prabowo was in the palace.
To maintain the government's dignity, Amien Rais suggested that Prabowo rotate Teddy to another position. "Teddy is actually just a cabinet secretary, but he acts as if he is the most influential, feeling more important than a cabinet secretary. Just give him another job, replace him with someone who is not a burden, that's all," he said.
