TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - For the first time in 14 years, Apple is projected to overtake Samsung as the leader in the global smartphone market, driven by the success of the new iPhone series.
Counterpoint Research projects that Apple will ship a total of over 243 million iPhones in 2025, securing an estimated 19.4 percent of the global market share.
Meanwhile, GSM Arena reports that Samsung, the current market leader, is expected to ship 235 million units, resulting in a market share of 18.7 percent.
iPhone 17 Drives Performance
Apple's projected performance is primarily driven by the success of the iPhone 17 series, which recorded a shipment growth of nine percent in the third quarter compared to the iPhone 16 series the previous year.
The initial demand for the iPhone 17 series also indicates a significant increase, with sales in the United States recording a 12 percent jump in the first four weeks after launch. In China, demand during the same period increased by 18 percent compared to last year.
This upward trend is further reinforced by the consumer renewal cycle for smartphone purchases that began during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Counterpoint Research estimates that the gap between Apple and Samsung will widen in the coming years. The institution asserts that Apple will maintain its position as the leader in global smartphone shipments until 2029, cementing its future dominance in the world smartphone market.
