Apple Watch to Feature AI-Powered Camera, Launch Expected in 2027

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Apple is developing a sophisticated smartwatch with AI-powered camera technology, such as AI Visual Intelligence. This technology is expected to be released in 2027.

The camera on the standard Apple Watch model will be on the screen, while the Apple Watch Ultra will have a camera on the side, precisely near the digital crown and button. "With them, the Apple Watch would be able to see the outside world and use AI to deliver relevant information,” said technology journalist Mark Gurman in a report by The Verge, as quoted on Wednesday, March 26, 2025.

The Visual Intelligence feature was first introduced on the iPhone 16. With this technology, the phone's camera can extract information from event flyers and add it to the calendar. The same feature can also be used to find information about restaurants. This intelligent visual tool is also said to be in development for AirPods.

Apple aims for this Apple Watch feature to be powered by its AI model when it is released in 2027. In his review, Gurman also highlighted the role of Mike Rockwell, a key figure in developing Apple's visual technology products, such as Vision Pro. Rockwell is also in charge of developing Siri's Large Language Model (LLM), which was previously delayed.

Rockwell, who leads the development of Vision Pro, will continue to work on its operating system, VisionOS. The operating system is expected to be the basis for future Apple accessories or wearables, including AI-powered AR glasses.
