TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Argentina national team midfielder Alexis Mac Allister emphasized that his squad feels no pressure ahead of their 2026 World Cup semifinal against England on Wednesday, July 15, 2026, at Atlanta Stadium, United States.
"We don't feel any pressure. We have experience playing in a World Cup semifinal, and we hope that helps," said Mac Allister before training at the Atlanta United Training Ground in Marietta, Georgia, on Tuesday.
However, the footballer, who plays for English giants Liverpool, is not underestimating England.
Mac Allister believes that England, coached by Thomas Tuchel, has great potential to cause problems for Argentina.
"England has an extraordinary squad of players and they have a good coach. I'm not at all surprised they've made it this far (in the 2026 World Cup)," said the 27-year-old.
He emphasized that Argentina always respects every opponent by giving their best performance to win the match.
Mac Allister said that every Argentine player is ready to give their all on the field for their country.
"We will do everything we can," he said.
Argentina is highly ambitious in defending its World Cup trophy, which it last won in 2022. To that end, the team coached by Lionel Scaloni is determined to crush England and advance to the final.
Argentina and England have met 14 times. England has won six, Argentina three, and the rest have been draws.
Argentina's last victory over England in the World Cup came in the round of 16 in 1998.
Argentina and England drew 2-2 after normal time and extra time. The match went to a penalty shootout, which Argentina won 4-3.
However, their most historic moment was their 2-1 victory in the 1986 World Cup quarterfinals thanks to two iconic goals by Diego Maradona: the "Hand of God" and the "Best of the Century" as Argentina won the World Cup.
Argentina has won three World Cups in 1978, 1986, and 2022. England has won once in 1966.
