TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - At least 100 Palestinian children have been killed in Israeli air and ground attacks in Gaza since the fragile ceasefire began three months ago, the United Nations (UN) said on Tuesday.
The UN children's agency, UNICEF, stated that at least 60 boys and 40 girls have been killed in the Israeli-occupied Palestinian territory since early October.
“More than 100 children have been killed in Gaza since the ceasefire,” said UNICEF spokesperson James Elder to reporters in Geneva, as reported by Arab News.
“That’s roughly a girl or a boy killed here every day during a ceasefire,” he said, speaking from Gaza City.
As reported by TRT World, Elder stated that the majority of the deaths of Palestinian children since the ceasefire was enacted were caused by Israeli military actions.
“These children are killed from airstrikes, drone strikes, including suicide drones. They’re killed from tank shelling. They’re killed from live ammunition. They’re killed from quad copters."
“We are at 100 — no doubt,” he added, saying that the actual number is likely higher.
There has been no response from the Israeli military.
An official in the Gaza health ministry, responsible for keeping casualty records, reported a higher figure of 165 children killed during the fragile ceasefire, out of a total of 442 fatalities.
“Additionally, seven children have died from exposure to cold since the beginning of this year,” said Zaher Al-Wahidi, Director of the Health Ministry's Computer Department.
Child Trauma in Gaza
Elder emphasized that the ongoing Israeli genocide that has occurred after more than two years of conflict that has made life for Palestinian children in Gaza "unimaginably hard."
“They still live in fear. The psychological damage remains untreated, and it’s becoming deeper and harder to heal the longer this goes on,” he said.
In November, authorities in Gaza stated that over 70,000 Palestinians have been killed since the Israeli genocide in October 2023. The majority of the casualties were women and children.
Almost 80 percent of buildings in Gaza have been destroyed or damaged by relentless air and ground attacks, according to UN data.
On January 1, Israel suspended access for 37 international aid agencies to the Gaza Strip, despite the UN's statement at the time calling the action "outrageous."
“Blocking international NGOs, blocking any humanitarian aid... that means blocking life-saving assistance,” Elder stated firmly on Monday.
Although UNICEF has significantly increased the aid entering the densely populated area since October, he stressed: “You need partners on the ground, and it (the aid) still doesn’t meet the need.”
“It’s impossible to overstate just how much still is required to be done here.”
He also asserted, that when key NGOs are barred from providing humanitarian aid and bearing witness, and when foreign journalists are banned, it begs the question of whether the aim is “restricting scrutiny of suffering of children.”
