TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Chairperson of the Central Leadership Board of the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P), Megawati Soekarnoputri, proposed the implementation of the second edition of the Asia-Africa Conference (KAA). She believes that implementing the conference is important for upholding the sovereignty of other nations in the face of the threat of neocolonialism.

"The implementation of the Asia-Africa Conference II is very relevant," said the former president in an official statement during the seminar "71 Years Commemorating KAA: The Relevance of the Asia-Africa Movement in the Current Geopolitical Crisis" at the PDI-P Party School in Lenteng Agung, South Jakarta, on Saturday, April 18, 2026.

She stated that the threats of neocolonialism and imperialism are still working in different forms and patterns in this modern era. According to her, the world needs to consider alternative ideas to create world peace. Among them is the ideology of the former president, Soekarno.

"The spirit of the KAA, GNB (Non-Aligned Movement), and the speech 'To Build The World A New' by Soekarno provides an answer to the importance of equality among nations," she said.

Megawati assessed that the current structure of the UN is outdated as it emerged from the constellation of World War II. She believes that a UN reform is necessary.

"Through the famous speech at the UN titled 'To Build The World a New' on September 30, 1960, Bung Karno (Soekarno) called for the reform or retooling of the UN. Equality among nations became Bung Karno's greatest agenda," said Megawati.

Megawati mentioned the Proclaimer's idea to abolish the privileges of certain countries. She believes that these privileges create global inequality.

"Furthermore, there is a need to change the UN Charter by including Pancasila as an international foundation," she said.

Megawati also advocated for changing the structure of the UN Security Council and relocating the UN headquarters to a neutral country. According to her, the UN headquarters should be located somewhere that is not caught up in the competition between major powers or the Cold War.

Given the turbulent geopolitical situation in the world, this reform is considered urgent. Megawati cited issues in Venezuela and attacks on Iran as evidence that the current international system is in turmoil.

Present at the event were PDI-P Secretary-General Hasto Kristiyanto, PDI-P Central Executive Board Chairman Ahmad Basarah, Head of the Indonesian History Agency of PDI-P Bonnie Triyana, as well as speakers such as Prof. Hikmahanto (International Relations Expert), Dr. Dina Sulaeman (Middle East Expert), Andi Widjayanto (Former Governor of the National Resilience Institute), and Heri Akhmadi (Former Ambassador of Japan). The event was also attended by members of the PDI-P Faction in the DPR and several activists, including the Director of Amnesty International Indonesia, Usman Hamid.
