Bandung Design Biennale 2025: Exploring the Past, Shaping the Future

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A group of designers in Bandung, Indonesia, are holding the Bandung Design Biennale at Laswi Heritage from October 3 to 25, 2025 with the theme Archiving Innovation. In addition to showcasing unique and creative works, the festival also includes discussions and workshops. "This year, we are presenting a wide spectrum of design," said the event's chairman Budi Dwi Rahmady to Tempo on Sunday, October 5, 2025.

Events at the Bandung Design Biennale

The event includes a series of main activities focused on design exploration. The festival kicked off with "BDG Lights '25: Designing the Dark" from October 3-5, 2025. Participants presented light arrangements and various forms of lamps on the outer walls for visitors, and also inside the room, new media installations, a talk show, and music performances. Meanwhile, "Design Archive: Ourchetype x BDB '25" during the exhibition presents an exploration of the role of design as a driving force for civilization through archives, creative processes, and design heritage.

There is also "BDG Design Mart: Spectrum of Design," an inclusive design market featuring a diverse spectrum of design fields and promoting affordable products for student visitors. Meanwhile, Arkiv Vilmansa held a solo exhibition titled "Widya Segara." According to Budi, there were serious discussions at the event "Design Forum: Idea to Invention" on October 11 and 12, 2025 about a series of design discourses. In addition, there are around 20 other collaborative programs for visitors. "The number of participants in this event is 22," he said.

Tracing the Footsteps of the Past and Shaping the Future

The Bandung Design Biennale is a biennial event first held in 2017. Its function as a collaborative program, innovation, and idea sharing for participants in the design ecosystem, plays an important role in strengthening Bandung's status as a UNESCO Design City. Through the theme Archiving Innovation, the committee invites designers, innovators, and the public to trace the history of design, unearth inspiration from the past, and formulate a vision for the future. This theme emphasizes that archives are not only artifacts, but also a source of knowledge, learning, and a trigger for new ideas.

The spirit embodied in this event is to realize a growing upward movement that reflects Bandung's efforts to stay relevant with global trends and to expand its design influence internationally. Meanwhile, the downward growth spirit symbolizes the commitment to be rooted in the local identity, values, traditions, and culture of Bandung as the foundation for design innovation.
