BMKG: M6.2 Earthquake Strikes Mindanao, No Tsunami Threat

6 hours ago 1

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta The Indonesian Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) reported a tectonic earthquake shaking the Mindanao region, Philippines, on Tuesday night, July 14, 2026, at 22:49:37 WIB.

BMKG's analysis results show that this earthquake has an updated magnitude of M6.2 at a depth of 35 kilometers. The earthquake's epicenter is located at coordinates 5.26N; 125.18E, precisely located in the sea 198 kilometers northwest of Tahuna, Sangihe Islands, North Sulawesi.

"Tsunami modeling results show that this earthquake does not have tsunami potential," said BMKG's Director of Earthquake and Tsunami, Wijayanto, on Tuesday.

Based on the estimated shaking map (shakemap), this earthquake was felt with an intensity scale of IV MMI in Marore Islands, Sangihe Islands, where it was felt by many people indoors, pottery broke, windows/doors rattled, and walls made noise.

Meanwhile, scale III MMI was felt in Kendahe, Sangihe Islands, and Miangas, Talaud Islands, where the vibration was felt as if a truck was passing by.

Wijayanto stated that considering the epicenter location and the depth of the hypocenter, the earthquake that occurred is a type of shallow earthquake due to subduction activity.

"The source mechanism analysis results show that the earthquake has an oblique-thrust movement mechanism," he said.

As of 23:10:00 WIB (Western Indonesian Time), BMKG monitoring results show one aftershock activity.
