TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) has mentioned the occurrence of the new moon phase on January 19, 2026, which has the potential to increase the maximum sea level height, triggering coastal floods or tidal floods.
The Director of Maritime Meteorology at BMKG, Eko Prasetyo, stated that based on the observation of water level data and tidal predictions, tidal floods are likely to occur in several coastal regions in Indonesia.
These regions include the coasts of North Sumatra, the Riau Islands, West Sumatra, Jambi, the Bangka Belitung Islands, Banten, Jakarta, West Java, Central Java, East Java, West Nusa Tenggara, East Kalimantan, South Kalimantan, Central Kalimantan, and West Kalimantan.
"Potential coastal floods generally impact the activities of communities around ports and coastal areas, such as loading and unloading activities at ports, activities in coastal settlements, as well as salt pond and inland fishing activities," Eko said in a written statement on Tuesday, January 13, 2025.
Eko urged the public to remain vigilant and prepared to anticipate the impacts of maximum high tides. "It is also important to pay attention to maritime weather updates from BMKG," he added.
