TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Head of the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), Dwikorita Karnawati, revealed that the sea surface temperature in the Indonesian region is currently warmer than normal. She explained this when discussing the possible dry season in most parts of Indonesia, which is predicted to be shorter this year.

The anomaly in sea surface temperature is projected to persist until September, "which can affect local weather in Indonesia," said Dwikorita, as quoted from a written statement on Saturday, April 12, 2025. This influence is through the increased formation of rain clouds.

Erma Yulihastin, a climate research professor at the Climate and Atmosphere Research Center of the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN), echoed the same sentiment. "All sea surface temperatures are currently warming," she said when contacted on Sunday evening, April 13, 2025.

In her subsequent explanation, Erma mentioned the largest anomaly was observed in the waters near the west coast of Australia. "Anomaly +2.7 degrees Celsius," she said. In the satellite image map she shared, the largest anomaly was indicated by older red color gradients.

The current rise in sea surface temperature around Indonesia reflects what happened in November-December last year. At that time, the sea surface temperature anomaly in Indonesian waters was measured at +2.0-2.5 degrees. The highest anomaly was in northern Australia, reaching +3 degrees.

According to Erma, the uniformly warming seas have also played a role in maintaining the system of tropical storms near Indonesia. Currently, the presence of a tropical cyclone seed 29S (referred to as 96S by BMKG) weakening with wind speeds of 65 km/hour is observed in the Timor Sea. In the Arafura Sea, there is a new tropical storm 97P (referred to as 97S by BMKG) with a wind speed of 30 km/hour.

"In the Indian Ocean, 2 mesovortices have formed. The Rossby waves cause the tropical storms to move westward," she said via the social media account X.
