UGM Verifies Jokowi's Education Records Amid Scrutiny

TEMPO.CO, Yogyakarta - Gadjah Mada University (UGM) has presented evidence substantiating the educational record of former President Joko Widodo or Jokowi, tracing his academic journey from enrollment to graduation from the Faculty of Forestry. This information was shared during a visit by representatives from the Defender Team of Ulama and Activists, who sought clarification regarding the authenticity of Jokowi's diploma.

"UGM confirms that Jokowi was registered and completed the entirety of the Tridharma Perguruan Tinggi (Three Pillars of Higher Education) curriculum within the Gadjah Mada community. And, we possess evidence, including letters and documents, readily available at the Faculty of Forestry," said Wening Udasmoro, the Vice Rector for Academic and Student Affairs at UGM, during a press briefing held at the Main Building on Tuesday, April 15, 2025.

He received three representatives from the group questioning the validity of Jokowi's UGM diploma: telecommunications expert Roy Suryo, digital forensics expert Rismon Hasiholan Sianipar, and medical doctor Tifauzia Tiasuma. Notably, all three individuals are alumni of UGM.

"This morning, we also presented [Jokowi's] undergraduate thesis. At the same event, there were eleven attendees from the same group. They also brought theses for review and photographs of relevant documents," Wening added.

He clarified that UGM's role is not to advocate for any individual but rather to provide factual information. "We are in this position to explain, as an institution that has academic records, whether he (Jokowi) was indeed a former student and whether he graduated. We have clarified that Joko Widodo graduated in November 1985 based on documentation from the Faculty of Forestry," emphasized the professor from the French Literature Department.

Wening stressed that UGM's dissemination of information is grounded in verifiable data, not unsubstantiated claims. "Our basis is not based on interpretations but data in our possession."

Adding to this, Vice Rector for Research and Community Service Arie Sudjito underscored UGM's commitment to academic integrity.

"UGM upholds the principle of integrity. This means we have values, and UGM belongs to the Indonesian people and the broader public, and we have the framework," Arie explained.

Gadjah Mada University formally affirms that Joko Widodo is an alumnus of its Faculty of Forestry, having completed his studies, beginning in 1980 with student identification number 80/34416/KT/1681, and graduating on November 5, 1985.

"UGM is not involved in the conflict of interest between the Defender Team of Ulama and Activists (TPUA) and Joko Widodo. As a public institution adhering to the higher education system in Indonesia, UGM is bound by laws and regulations concerning the protection of personal data and the Freedom of Information Act. Therefore, UGM is only authorized to disclose data that is inherently public. Personal information will only be released upon formal request from law enforcement agencies," clarified Andi Sandi Antonius Tabusassa Tonralipu, the Secretary of Gadjah Mada University.

Furthermore, the Dean of the UGM Faculty of Forestry, Sigit Sunarta, affirmed that the faculty possesses comprehensive documentation pertaining to Joko Widodo's academic tenure at the university.

"Regarding Pak Jokowi, we have documents, and our statements are based on this documentation. This includes his registration, enrollment at UGM, academic coursework, fieldwork, and the defense of his thesis before examiners, where he was declared to have graduated," Sunarta stated.

Concerning the diploma itself, Sunarta explained that the original document is currently held by Jokowi, as it was conferred upon him during the graduation ceremony. "We only have a copy of it. Regarding the original thesis, during the thesis preparation process, multiple copies are typically produced, with some retained by the faculty," he concluded.
