TEMPO.CO, Jakarta In order to reduce the threat of heavy rain and extreme weather following the recent floods and landslides in the Sumatra region, the Indonesian Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) will lead the supervision of the weather modification operation (OMC) to be carried out by the government.

The Head of BMKG, Teuku Faisal Fathani, stated that the BMKG team will head to the OMC post at Kualanamu Airport, Medan. "The main focus of this OMC is to reduce the intensity of rain in the disaster-affected areas. It is hoped that the OMC can be implemented in a timely and targeted manner, as part of mitigation efforts and disaster management," said Faisal in a written statement on Sunday, November 30, 2025.

BMKG expressed concern about the hydro-meteorological disasters that have occurred in North Sumatra, West Sumatra, and Aceh. Teuku emphasized that BMKG continues to provide early warnings and support for post-disaster management. This is in line with the instruction of President Prabowo Subianto that disaster management must be carried out quickly, targeted, and ensure that affected communities receive the necessary basic protection.

"Our prayers and empathy go out to the families who have suffered losses, and to all the residents still facing direct impacts in the field. We are committed to supporting emergency response operations, including providing early warnings, analysis of extreme weather risks, and technical support for the smooth delivery of aid and protection for field personnel," said Faisal.

BMKG is an agency mandated to provide meteorological, climatological, and geophysical information. Therefore, he said, BMKG plays an important role in cross-ministry and agency collaborations, working together to anticipate, respond, and manage ongoing disasters.

Cross-sector coordination, including with local governments, has been carried out to support the acceleration of post-disaster management. In this regard, BMKG provides periodic early warning information on extreme weather in the affected areas through all available information channels.

As part of the national integration measures in this emergency response operation, BMKG is deploying all its resources from the central to regional levels to provide critical data and information quickly, accurately, and efficiently. With the optimization of operational units, all data can be directly used by decision-makers in the field. "This effort is part of BMKG's contribution to ensuring that national responses are effective and coordinated," said Faisal.

He expressed the highest appreciation to all parties - the central and regional government, TNI (Indonesian Army)/Polri (Indonesian Police), BNPB (National Disaster Management Agency), Basarnas (National Search and Rescue Agency), volunteers, the business community, and the public - who have shown extraordinary dedication in disaster management and mitigation. "This collective synergy and resilience form an important foundation in accelerating recovery and ensuring public safety," said Faisal.
