TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The repatriation of Nathasya Cindy Lea Antou’s body, an Indonesian victim of an online scam in Cambodia, was delayed after her partner allegedly misused the donation funds meant for covering the costs. As a result, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs stepped in to facilitate the process.
Nathasya, who died from severe pneumonia on April 10, 2025, was finally returned home, with her remains arriving at Sam Ratulangi Airport in Manado on May 26, 2025, at 06:15 WITA, following a prolonged delay. According to an official statement from the Ministry, funds for the repatriation had already been gathered from companies and donations from the victim’s colleagues.
However, those funds, entrusted to her partner, were reportedly never paid to the service provider in Cambodia. Due to the suspected misuse, the repatriation was stalled until the Indonesian Embassy in Phnom Penh intervened to complete the arrangements.
At the formal handover of Nathasya’s body to her family, Ministry of Foreign Affairs representatives encouraged the family to report her partner for the alleged misappropriation. The event was also attended by officials from the North Sulawesi Migrant Worker Protection Service (BP3MI) and local village authorities.
This case underscores the persistent threat of online scams targeting Indonesian workers in Cambodia. The government continues to advocate for stricter enforcement against scam operations and urges citizens to remain wary of suspicious overseas job offers.
Nathasya’s case not only sheds light on the ongoing exploitation of Indonesian nationals abroad but also exposes a troubling issue involving the mishandling of funds meant to support grieving families.
