TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The newly inaugurated head of the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN), Arif Satria, spoke on the agency's funding under his leadership. Arif, who was sworn in yesterday, November 10, replaced Laksana Tri Handoko as the state research agency chief.
Arif explained that BRIN will utilize three funding sources, which come primarily from the state budget, followed by the sovereign wealth fund Danantara, and contributions from international agencies.
He also said that the agency will optimize alternative funding sources, stressing the substantial funding required for conducting research and studies.
"Because whether we like it or not, our research requires substantial funding. This is true for any country; if we want to conduct research, financing becomes a crucial factor," Arif said after the handover ceremony at the BRIN Office, Central Jakarta, on Tuesday, November 11, 2025.
Initially, BRIN's 2025 budget was set at Rp5.84 trillion. But Prabowo's budget cuts earlier this year reduce the funding by Rp1.42 trillion, or by 24.46 percent. Meanwhile, for 2026, the government has earmarked Rp6,144.6 trillion for BRIN, which is still smaller than the 2024 budget of Rp6.3 trillion.
Arif mentioned that future research will focus on food and energy research development with a nanotechnology approach. He stated that this aligns with the mandate of President Prabowo Subianto to maintain national food resilience.
"I believe that research on food and energy must be strengthened. The approach can be through nanotechnology, AI (artificial intelligence), and genomics," Arif said.
He regarded food and energy issues as strategically crucial subjects requiring orchestration and collaboration from various institutions and ministries. The former rector of IPB University stated that he has coordinated with the Ministry of Agriculture, the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, and universities for research development in these two sectors.
Over the next two months, Arif will synthesize all inputs and evaluations from employees and researchers at BRIN into a framework. He mentioned that various documents and strategic plans will be formulated during this period to promote research progress in the country.
"The big picture, or the framework, as I mentioned yesterday, is that we need national consolidation in the field of research and innovation," Arif stated.
