Canada Open to Indonesia Partnership on Carbon Capture and Storage

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Canada’s Ambassador to Indonesia, Jess Dutton, said Ottawa is open to partnering with Jakarta in developing carbon capture and storage (CCS) technology to support the global transition toward clean energy.

In a special interview with Antara in Jakarta on Monday, Dutton said Canada ranks among the world’s top five countries in CCS development, with eight active projects out of about 70 worldwide.

“Canada is open to sharing knowledge and collaborating with Indonesia, which has shown strong interest in building its capabilities in CCS,” he said.

Dutton noted that while Canada has a robust oil and gas industry, it faces the challenge of reducing carbon emissions without undermining an energy sector vital to its economy.

“One of our key solutions has been investing in environmentally friendly technologies such as CCS, supported by favorable geological conditions,” he explained.

Although Indonesia’s geological profile differs from Canada’s, Dutton believes both countries have significant potential to expand cooperation in CCS and clean energy.

“Through partnerships and investment, including via multilateral institutions, there are many opportunities for us to jointly advance this technology and make the world greener,” he said.

CCS and Carbon Capture, Utilization, and Storage (CCUS) technologies form a central part of Indonesia’s strategy to achieve net-zero emissions by 2060.

The Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) views carbon storage as critical to cutting emissions from hard-to-abate industries such as cement, steel, and petrochemicals. The government aims to have most of its 15 CCS and CCUS projects operational by 2030.

Indonesia also holds vast carbon storage potential, up to 577.62 gigatons, comprising 4.85 gigatons from depleted oil and gas fields and 572.77 gigatons from saline aquifers. This makes the country one of the world’s largest potential carbon storage hubs.
