CCTV Captures Final Moments of Young Indonesian Diplomat Before Death

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Young diplomat Arya Daru Pangayunan, who was found dead with his face wrapped in duct tape in his boarding room in Gondangdia, Central Jakarta, was captured on CCTV on Monday night, July 7, 2025.

Arya Daru was found dead on Tuesday morning, July 8, 2025, after his wife, who lived in Yogyakarta, called the boarding house keeper to check on her husband's condition because she could not reach him.

From the CCTV footage quoted by TVOne, Arya Daru was seen heading to his room at 23:23 on Monday. Meanwhile, in a video shared by Kumparan, he was seen leaving the room carrying a black plastic bag towards the boarding house's exit door, and returning empty-handed at 23:24.

He was wearing a black shirt and pants, just as he had when he arrived, but all the buttons on his shirt were already open. He had already changed his black shoes to white sandals when throwing away the trash bag.

The case of the 39-year-old UGM graduate diplomat's death is being handled by the Metropolitan Regional Police, which aims to complete the investigation within a week.

"Maybe we'll finish in a week, then there will be a conclusion. Insya Allah, hopefully we'll finish in a week," said the Chief of the Metropolitan Regional Police, Inspector General Karyoto, in his statement in Jakarta, Friday, July 11, 2025.

Karyoto mentioned that several pieces of evidence need to be studied by the forensic team, including surveillance camera footage, autopsy results, and digital evidence.

"The digital evidence from laptops and others, maybe forensics can trace the phone, where, at what time, he was in contact with whom," he said.

When asked if there were any special considerations in handling this case, given his status as a diplomat, Karyoto mentioned that they had handled many cases like this.

"Things like this, we have a lot of experience in the Metro Jaya Police, a lot of experience. But clearly, we comprehensively study everything, not just one (evidence) and then conclude, oh no. Let's study everything first, after that, then we can conclude," he said as quoted by Antara.

Six CCTVs

Arya Daru's place of death is a boarding house named Guest House Gondia, located at 22 Gondangdia Kecil Street, Menteng, Central Jakarta. There are at least six CCTVs in this building.

There are two entrances to the boarding house area. The doors are located between the Rumah Tua Vape shop. On the right side of the shop, a CCTV is pointing towards the inner courtyard of the boarding house. Meanwhile, on the left side, there are four CCTVs. There are three pointing toward the front yard and one pointing toward the inside of the boarding house area.

There is a CCTV right in front of Arya Daru's room, which has now been cordoned off by the police. The camera is facing the entrance gate.

Additionally, there is one CCTV inside the vape shop. The police checked the shop area last Wednesday. "One CCTV has been taken by the police," said the vape shop guard named Dani when met on Thursday, July 10, 2025.

Dani said he was not on duty on Monday, the night Daru was suspected to have died. Therefore, he did not know the situation on the night before Daru's body was found. The diplomat's body was only found on Tuesday morning.

Deputy Chief of the Criminal Investigation Unit of the Central Jakarta Police Commissioner Sigit Karyono said the fingerprint tracing process is still ongoing. The police have not yet determined the identity of the person whose fingerprints were found on the duct tape. "It is still being processed," he said to reporters at the crime scene (TKP), Wednesday, July 9, 2025.

The Central Jakarta Police, together with the Central Police Headquarters' Identification Center (Pusident), revisited the crime scene last Wednesday. They checked several items at the Guest House Gondia.

Following the inspection, it was determined that there were no missing documents or valuable items belonging to Arya Daru. The police have secured two CCTVs in the boarding house. Sigit also confirmed that the access card to Daru's boarding house is the only one; there is no duplicate. "Only this one," he said.
