TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Former Trade Minister Thomas Trikasih Lembong will face a plea hearing today. Tom Lembong will read his defense in the alleged sugar import corruption case.
Today's trial of Tom Lembong will be held at the Corruption Court at the Central Jakarta District Court. "The trial location and time are tentative," said Andi Saputra, spokesperson for the Central Jakarta District Court, in an official statement on Wednesday, July 9, 2025.
The trial will be presided over by Denie Arsan Fatrika. The panel of judges will consist of Purwanto S Abdullah and Alfis Setiawan.
Previously, the prosecutor had demanded a seven-year prison sentence for Tom Lembong. He was also ordered to pay a fine of Rp 750 million, or an additional six months in prison.
The alleged sugar import case allegedly caused state losses of Rp 578 billion. According to the prosecutor, Tom Lembong was involved by approving sugar imports without coordination meetings with ministries or institutions.
However, the prosecutor believes Tom did not benefit from the proceeds of corruption. Therefore, the prosecutor did not impose a replacement fine on him.
Tom Lembong is threatened with Article 2 paragraph (1) or Article 3 in conjunction with Article 18 of Law Number 31 of 1999 concerning the Eradication of Criminal Acts of Corruption as amended by Law Number 20 of 2001 in conjunction with Article 55 paragraph (1) point 1 of the Criminal Code.
