ChatGPT Receives 2.5 Billion Prompts a Day, Starting to Rival Google?

1 month ago 26

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - OpenAI recently stated that ChatGPT now receives about 2.5 billion prompts or requests from users worldwide every day. Around 330 million of the total prompts come from users in the United States. "These numbers show just how ubiquitous OpenAI’s flagship product (ChatGPT) is becoming," reads Tech Crunch's review on Monday, July 21.

Google's parent company Alphabet has not officially disclosed daily search data so far. However, the management recently stated that Google receives 5 trillion searches per year, which is equivalent to an average of 14 billion searches daily. Independent researchers have also found similar figures.

Neil Patel from the digital marketing company NP Digital, for example, estimates that Google serves 13.7 billion daily searches. Research from two other digital marketing companies, SparkToro and Datos, recorded 16.4 billion searches per day.

Although it lags in performance, ChatGPT's growth remains staggering. In December 2024, OpenAI's Chief Executive Officer Sam Altman mentioned that users were sending over 1 billion requests per day to ChatGPT. Referring to Altman's statement, it means that the volume of searches or interactions with ChatGPT has more than doubled in just eight months.

The weekly active users of the ChatGPT AI chatbot were previously known to have increased from 300 million in December 2024 to 400 million last February. According to a report released by the venture capital firm Andreessen Horowitz (a16z) on March 6, 2025, it took ChatGPT nine months to increase the number of active users per week from 100 million in November 2023 to 200 million in August 2024.

ChatGPT had 100 million monthly active users only two months after its release as a research preview in November 2022. This growth makes OpenAI's product the fastest-growing application to attract users.
