TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Colombian President Abelardo de la Espriella expressed his gratitude to Russian President Vladimir Putin for his expression of support for the victims of the devastating earthquake that struck the country on Monday, August 10.
"We gratefully accept your words addressed to those who lost their loved ones and to all Colombians who are now trying to recover from what happened. Our country is united: we are addressing the consequences of the emergency and providing support to every affected family. I thank you for standing with Colombia in this difficult time," de la Espriella said on the X platform, as quoted by ANTARA.
De la Espriella said Colombians were united in the face of the disaster.
Meanwhile, the Russian Embassy in Colombia has published a message from the Russian president on Tuesday, in which Putin expressed his condolences to de la Espriella and the families of those who died in the earthquake. Putin also expressed his hope to de la Espriella that those still being treated in hospital would recover soon.
"Please accept my deep condolences over the numerous human casualties and the large-scale destruction caused by the earthquake in the western regions of Colombia. Please convey words of sincere sympathy and support to the families and friends of the deceased, as well as wishes for a speedy recovery to all those affected by this disaster," the message read.
On Monday, a 7.4 magnitude earthquake struck Colombia. The epicenter was near the city of San Jose del Palmar in the Choco Department. Tremors were felt across much of Colombia, as well as in neighboring countries.
It was reported that at least 190 people died and 1,679 others were injured due to the earthquake. In Cali City, the capital of Valle del Cauca Department, 239 people remain trapped under rubble, while another 180 are reported missing.
A total of 243 buildings collapsed in the five worst-affected cities: Pereira, Quibdo, Manizales, Armenia, and Cali. These five cities remain in the red alert zone.
