TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Health authorities in both Hong Kong and Singapore have reported a significant rise in Covid-19 cases, as a new wave of infections sweeps across Asia.
Albert Au, Head of the Communicable Disease Branch at the Hong Kong Centre for Health Protection, confirmed that virus activity in the city is currently at a high level.
According to a report by the Bangkok Post, the proportion of respiratory samples testing positive for Covid-19 in Hong Kong recently reached its highest point in a year.
Severe cases, including fatalities, have also hit the highest level in approximately a year, with 31 cases recorded in the past week alone.
Although the current rise in cases has not exceeded the peak infection levels of the past two years, the increasing viral load detected in wastewater, along with a surge in medical consultations and Covid-related hospitalizations, indicates that the virus is spreading actively in Hong Kong, home to more than 7 million people.
Singapore is also maintaining heightened vigilance over Covid-19. The country’s health ministry released its first update on infection numbers in nearly a year earlier this month.
The number of confirmed cases rose by 28 percent, reaching 14,200 during the week ending May 3, compared to the previous seven days. Daily hospital admissions increased by around 30 percent.
Health officials suggest that the spike in cases could be attributed to several factors, including a decline in overall population immunity.
However, the Singapore health ministry noted that there is currently no evidence that the circulating variants are more transmissible or lead to more severe illness compared to those seen during the height of the pandemic.
Covid-19 cases have been on the rise across all regions in recent months. The virus has now evolved into a disease characterized by periodic surges.
In response, health authorities have urged the public to keep their Covid vaccinations up to date and reminded those at higher risk to get booster shots.
According to News19.com, symptoms of Covid that should not be overlooked include sore throat, runny or blocked nose, fatigue, cough, headache, muscle or body aches, mild fever, or chills.
