Death Toll in Thailand-Cambodia Conflict Rises to 35

1 month ago 28

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The armed clash between Thailand and Cambodia has continued for the fourth day, with the death toll reaching 35 people on Sunday, July 27, 2025. According to Thai Enquirer, quoted by Anadolu, Thai authorities updated the casualty figure to 22 people, consisting of 14 civilians and 8 soldiers.

Additionally, 140 people have been injured. In Cambodia, the number of fatalities is recorded at 13. Over 200,000 residents from both sides of the border have been evacuated due to this conflict.

Exchange of Fire and Allegations of Territory Violation

Tensions between the two countries have escalated since an incident at the end of May that resulted in the death of a Cambodian soldier in a brief skirmish at the border. The Cambodian Ministry of Defense accused the Thai military of launching artillery and rocket attacks on their territory, including a historic temple complex. "Thai forces continued to invade Cambodian territory," said Ministry of Defense spokesperson Maly Socheata.

Conversely, Thai military spokesperson Richa Suksuvanon stated that Cambodian forces had fired artillery at various areas, damaging infrastructure. "Thai side will only cease fire when Cambodia comes to negotiate," she said.

She also mentioned that Cambodian troops mobilized long-range rocket launchers. "The situation remains tense and Cambodian troops may be preparing intensified military operations to inflict maximum damage in the final stages before negotiations," said the Thai military statement.

Repatriation of Bodies and Peace Signals

On Sunday afternoon, Thai authorities handed over the bodies of 12 deceased Cambodian soldiers in the clash to the Cambodian government through the permanent border post Chong Sa-ngam in the Phu Sing district, Si Sa Ket province.

The Thai military said this operation is conducted based on humanitarian principles to honor all fallen soldiers, regardless of nationality. There has been no official statement from the Cambodian government regarding the repatriation of these bodies.

Ceasefire Negotiation Plan

U.S. President Donald Trump stated on Saturday that he had spoken with the Prime Minister of Thailand and the Prime Minister of Cambodia. He called for the initiation of a ceasefire. "I believe both sides want to make a deal," he said as quoted by ABC News.

Negotiations between Thailand and Cambodia are scheduled to take place on Monday, July 28, 2025, in Malaysia. The Thai government has appointed Acting Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai as the head of the negotiation delegation.

The United States has also dispatched diplomatic envoys to Malaysia to support peace efforts. U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated that officials from the Department of State are in Malaysia to assist the peace process.
