TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Special Detachment 88 Anti-Terror (Densus 88) found digital traces belonging to the suspected perpetrator of the explosion at State Senior High School or SMAN 72 Jakarta. The student had a history of accessing graphic photos and videos of deceased individuals in online communities.
"Usually as a result of accidents, war, or other brutal incidents," said Densus 88 spokesperson AKBP Mayndra Eka Wardhana, confirming the details on Tuesday, November 11, 2025.
Eka stated that the twelfth-grade student independently assembled seven explosive devices that he brought to the school. Four improvised bombs detonated at two locations, while the remaining three were found intact.
The Densus 88 statement aligns with accounts from several students at SMAN 72 Jakarta. An eleventh-grade student, identified as ZA, said the suspect frequently drew weapons and enjoyed watching violent videos.
The explosion at SMAN 72 Jakarta occurred on Friday, November 7, 2025. The incident took place around 12:30 p.m. local time (WIB) while students and teachers were performing Friday prayers in the school's prayer room or musalla, located in the Kompleks Kodamar, Kelapa Gading, North Jakarta.
The incident involved two explosions: the first inside the third-floor musalla, followed by a second explosion minutes later in the back area of the school canteen. The blasts resulted in at least 96 injuries, including the suspected perpetrator.
The explosion at SMAN 72 Jakarta is suspected to have been orchestrated by a student from the school. Chief of National Police General Listyo Sigit Prabowo stated that the suspected perpetrator is currently in police custody, and officers are investigating his identity, environment, and place of residence.
Listyo added that police are investigating the suspect's motive for assembling and detonating the devices at the school. "We are delving into the motive of how the individual then assembled and carried out the action. We will explain everything after all the information, findings in the field, and further comprehensive investigations and inquiries are complete," Listyo said at the Merdeka Palace, Jakarta, on Friday, November 7, 2025.
