TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Jakarta Environmental Office revealed that the domestic sector contributes as the biggest source of river pollution in the region. This mapping was carried out in collaboration with the Institute of Technology at the University of Indonesia (Universitas Indonesia, UI).

"From the mapping results, the biggest source of pollution comes from the domestic sector, especially micro, small, and medium enterprises, which are required to have an Environmental Management Statement Letter," said the Head of Jakarta's Environmental Office, Asep Kuswanto, in a written statement on Monday, September 29, 2025.

Asep stated that other sources of pollution come from workshops, laundry businesses, restaurants, printing shops, and slaughterhouses. Many businesses in various fields still do not have adequate wastewater management systems.

The Environmental Office revealed that the biggest sources of river pollution in Jakarta mostly stem from washing, bathing, and household waste. Wastewater from dishwashing and cooking is discharged directly into water channels by residents without proper treatment. Furthermore, piles of garbage along the riverbanks contribute significantly to the pollution.

Data from Jakarta's Environmental Office reveals that over the past four years, the water quality of Jakarta's rivers has remained heavily polluted, ranging from 36 percent to 71 percent. The provincial government acknowledges the need for intervention in managing domestic and industrial waste, as well as improving its governance.

Asep mentioned that the provincial government is currently launching the Eco Act program for culinary businesses and other sectors to practice environmentally friendly activities. The program includes the dissemination of regulations, technical guidance, and consultations for implementing sustainable waste management systems. "Nevertheless, these efforts will go nowhere without public awareness," he said.

Regarding domestic waste management, Asep said that the Jakarta government is establishing and operating dozens of Domestic Wastewater Management Systems, as well as revitalizing septic tanks in densely populated areas. Additionally, large-scale waste management infrastructure through the Jakarta Sewerage System is currently being prepared, which has already been included in the National Strategic Project.

The system aims to cover 80 percent of Jakarta's area and reduce river pollution by 70 percent. "We are optimistic that this step will restore the function of Jakarta's rivers to a healthy state," Asep stated.
