TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Ahead of Eid 2025, the Yogyakarta Special Region Tourism Office projects 1.1 million tourists will visit the city. The estimate is based on the 9 percent increase from the previous year.
The Yogyakarta branch of Indonesian Forum for the Environment (Walhi) warns that this influx will increase waste accumulation. Walhi Yogyakarta’s Campaign Division chief, Elki Setiyo Hadi, estimated that if each person produces 0.5 kilograms of waste daily, Yogyakarta will see an additional 550 tons of waste per day.
“This is a minimum estimate, and the actual amount could be even higher,” Elki told Tempo on Wednesday, March 26.
He referred to the 2025 New Year holiday, where the unprepared provincial government dumped waste at the closed Piyungan landfill.
Previously, Yogyakarta Regional Secretary Beny Suharso stated that the provincial government had agreed to clear several waste depots in the city.
However, Elki noted that while Walhi confirmed the clearing of certain depots, such as Purawisata, the effort remains a short-term solution rather than a serious response to the waste crisis. He questioned where the relocated waste would be processed.
“Efforts to clear depots look to be a temporary fix, creating new problems elsewhere, outside Yogyakarta’s main tourist areas,” he said.
Ahead of Eid, Walhi identified two cases highlighting the city’s worsening waste crisis. First, waste buildup along Ring Road Selatan, at the border of Bantul and Yogyakarta. Second, four trucks from Sleman dumping waste in Kemalang, Klaten.
Elki referenced Article 9 of Law No. 18/2008 on Waste Management, which mandates local governments to supervise and regulate waste management by third parties.
These cases, he said, show that Sleman, Yogyakarta City, and Bantul have failed to enforce proper oversight. He added that Article 8 of the same law gives provincial governments the mandate to coordinate waste management and resolve inter-regional disputes. This means that the existence of wild waste on the South Ring Road and the export of waste originating from Sleman Regency must be facilitated by the DIY Provincial Government.
Under this law, Elki emphasized, neither the provincial nor local governments can deny responsibility for illegal waste dumping in their jurisdictions.
