TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Minister of Youth and Sports Erick Thohir has presented a proposal for two national sports facility projects to President Prabowo Subianto. Erick met with Prabowo at the President's private residence in Hambalang, Bogor, West Java.
Erick informed the President that these projects would be the foundation for athlete development from an early age. "We reported the construction plans for the National Sports Academy and the National Team Training Center to President Prabowo Subianto," Erick stated in a written release on Wednesday, April 22, 2026.
The Minister expressed hope that these facilities would bolster the achievements of Indonesian athletes. "So that they can become national ambassadors reflecting Indonesia's glory on the world stage," he remarked.
In the same statement, the former State-Owned Enterprises Minister also conveyed the gratitude of athletes, coaches, and the entire 2025 SEA Games and 2026 ASEAN Para Games delegations to Prabowo. He specifically highlighted the bonuses awarded to those based on their medal counts.
Erick noted that these bonuses are accompanied by financial literacy programs to ensure the funds are managed properly as long-term savings. "This is a tangible manifestation of the President’s concern for the welfare of Indonesian athletes," he said.
Furthermore, Erick extended his appreciation to two of Prabowo’s key aides. "I would like to thank State Secretary Prasetyo Hadi and Cabinet Secretary Teddy Indra Wijaya for their consistent support in driving the progress of Indonesian sports," Erick added.
Prior to this meeting, Erick had met with Cabinet Secretary Teddy Indra Wijaya to submit a performance report for his ministry. According to the Cabinet Secretariat, the meeting focused on the outcomes of the Ministry of Youth and Sports' long-term programs. Erick and Teddy evaluated sports performance following the 2026 SEA Games and ASEAN Para Games.
Moreover, Erick reported the results of a deregulation program within the Ministry, which streamlined 191 Ministerial Regulations into just four. "Utilizing an omnibus method, this deregulation slashed approximately 60 percent of existing provisions, reducing 1,500 articles to 600," the Cabinet Secretariat’s release noted on Monday, April 20, 2026.
During that meeting, Teddy mentioned that the deregulation policy aligned with President Prabowo’s specific directives. He explained that the move is part of a broader bureaucratic reform intended to eliminate regulatory overlaps and simplify governance.
Teddy conveyed that Prabowo fully supports the deregulation efforts led by Erick. Additionally, the Gerindra Party Chair expressed hope that these results would enhance program efficiency, accelerate the cultivation of athletic talent, and strengthen the national sports industry.
