TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A video claiming the Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI) successfully freed 6,000 Palestinian hostages on the Israeli border was shared by Facebook and TikTok accounts [archive] on November 23, 2025.

This video spread after the declaration of a ceasefire between Hamas and Israel on October 10, 2025. The narrator in the video stated that the operation was led by a joint elite unit from the Army, Navy, and Air Force.

So, is it true that the Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI) released 6,000 hostages in Gaza?

FACT CHECK

Tempo verified the content by comparing it with reliable sources. The results showed that the Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI) never conducted a hostage-release operation in Gaza.

The hostage-release process in Gaza occurred as part of the ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas, not through a TNI operation. Al Jazeera reported that Hamas and Israel had implemented a prisoner exchange agreement under the ceasefire agreement. As a result of the agreement, nearly 2,000 imprisoned Palestinians were to be released from Israeli prisons. Hamas was also required to release 20 Israeli prisoners.

On Monday, October 13, 2025, the first batch of seven hostages was handed over to the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC). The Israeli military later confirmed that 13 other hostages taken from Israel during the Hamas-led offensive on October 7, 2023, had also been transferred.

As of December 2025, Indonesia had not sent active military forces to Gaza for combat operations or hostage releases. A press release from the Indonesian National Armed Forces Information Center explained that on August 17, 2025, the Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI) carried out a humanitarian aid distribution mission in the Gaza Strip, Palestine. This mission was fully completed on September 14, 2025.

In addition to the aid distribution mission, the Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI) also sent a TNI Health Task Force called Patriot Usada IV to Gaza.

Previously, the TNI stated its readiness to send up to 20,000 personnel for peacekeeping and humanitarian assistance missions. However, this is still awaiting an official mandate from the United Nations (UN).

"Regarding the readiness of 20,000 troops and training, the figure of 20,000 is the TNI's capacity that has been prepared within the framework of peacekeeping and humanitarian support," said the Head of the TNI Information Center, Major General Freddy Ardianzah, as quoted by Antara, Sunday, November 16, 2025.

Colonel (Arm.) Rico Sirait, Head of the Defense Information Bureau of the Ministry of Defense's Secretariat General, stated that the Indonesian government is, in principle, willing to contribute according to its capacity and extensive experience in peacekeeping missions. The TNI and the Ministry of Defense have not yet determined the troop deployment schedule or deployment schedule.

CONCLUSION

Based on the results of a fact-check, the Tempo Fact Check Team concluded that the TNI's claim to have freed 6,000 hostages in Gaza is false.
