Ferry Fire Evacuation Brings 111 Survivors, 2 Bodies to Surabaya

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta A total of 111 survivors and two fatalities from the fire on the KMP Mutiara Santosa II ferry ship in the waters north of Sumenep, East Java, were evacuated through Tanjung Perak Port, Surabaya, after the KM Meratus Pematang Siantar docked on Sunday evening, August 2, 2026.

All victims were evacuated in stages from the ferry ship to the pier under the escort of joint officers at Tanjung Perak Port in Surabaya on Sunday, starting at 11:15 PM WIB (Western Indonesian Time).

Before disembarking the ship, the medical team triaged all survivors by examining their physical condition and placing them on identification bracelets according to the level of medical care they needed, ranging from minor injuries to conditions requiring specialized care.

The two fatalities were evacuated in body bags before being transferred to ambulances for transport to the hospital.

After the evacuation process at the pier was completed, the survivors were directed to the Gapura Surya Nusantara (GSN) Building at Tanjung Perak Port for data collection and further treatment.

The Disaster Victim Identification (DVI) Post and the Ante Mortem Post were also on standby at the location to support the victim identification process and provide services to families.

As of Monday, at approximately 1:40 AM WIB, data collection, medical examinations, and victim treatment were still ongoing in the port area.

According to data from the Basarnas Post, as of an update at approximately 10:20 PM WIB, 236 victims had been evacuated, consisting of 231 survivors and five deaths.

Of these, 113 victims, or 111 survivors and two deaths, arrived at Tanjung Perak Port aboard the KM Meratus Pematang Siantar.

This leaves 123 other victims, consisting of 120 survivors and three deaths, who were evacuated using other ships to their treatment facilities in coordination with the joint SAR team.

Victims were evacuated using several ships located in the area. The KM Meratus Pematang Siantar evacuated the most victims, followed by the TB Hasnur 26, Meratus Project 3, Selaras Mas, Ferindo I, SC Aila XVII, British Mentor, and other vessels assisting in the rescue operation.

The SAR operation was also supported by the KN SAR 249 Permadi, RIB 01 Sumenep, KRI Nala-363, KRI Bung Hatta-370, a fleet of civilian vessels, rescue vehicles, water rescue equipment, and complete medical supplies.
