TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A fire broke out at the Sade traditional tourism village in Rambitan Village, Pujut District, Central Lombok Regency, West Nusa Tenggara (NTB), Indonesia, on the night of Saturday, August 22, 2026.
Rambitan Village Head Lalu Winakse stated that the fire at the Sade traditional houses began around 10:00 PM Central Indonesian Time (WITA). However, the cause of the fire remains unknown.
According to Lalu Winakse, firefighters were working to extinguish the flames and evacuate residents living in the area. "We are currently evacuating residents affected by the fire," he said, as quoted by Antara.
Ridwan Maruf, Head of the Central Lombok Regency Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD), stated that preliminary data indicated 120 houses had burned down. "The number of affected residents is still being tallied, while the location for temporary shelters depends on the outcome of today's coordination meeting," he said.
The fire reportedly originated in one of the houses in the center of the traditional settlement. It then spread to several other houses, most of which were constructed using wood, bamboo, and thatch grass.
Supardan, Head of the Central Lombok Regency Fire and Rescue Agency, said that as of early Sunday morning, his team was still struggling to extinguish the blaze.
Dozens of fire trucks were deployed to the scene to tackle the fire. "This included assistance from East Lombok Regency, West Lombok Regency, Mataram City, the NTB Provincial Government, and all fire and rescue units from Central Lombok Regency," he said.
Citing Antara, the traditional Sade houses are made of thatch with woven bamboo walls (*bedek*). The floors are made of clay mixed with buffalo dung and rice straw ash.
The mixture of clay and buffalo dung causes the earthen floor to harden, becoming as solid as cement. This flooring technique has been passed down from their ancestors.
Building materials such as wood and bamboo are sourced from the surrounding environment. Bamboo pegs are used to join the wooden components together.
Sasak houses feature only a single, narrow, low-set doorway and have no windows.
