TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian Minister of Agriculture Andi Amran Sulaiman stated that he has received requests from representatives of India, Australia, the Philippines, and Brazil for urea fertilizer. "These four countries have requested and pleaded to obtain urea," said Amran at the office of the Coordinating Ministry for Food on Wednesday, April 22, 2026.

Amran revealed that about five days ago, he received a phone call from the Indian Ambassador. During the phone call, the Indian Ambassador requested the import of approximately 500,000 tons of urea fertilizer. Meanwhile, Australia also requested the import of around 250,000 tons of fertilizer for the first phase.

He stated that Indonesia's current fertilizer production is 7.8 million tons, while domestic demand is around 6 million tons. The Minister of Agriculture is open to importing 1 million tons from the surplus production. "We will see what is best for the nation," he said.

Deputy Minister of Agriculture Sudaryono previously announced the plan to export fertilizer. He stated that four countries are in communication to import urea fertilizer from Indonesia amid global distribution disruptions due to the situation in the Strait of Hormuz.

"So far, India, the Philippines, Brazil, and Australia have been in communication (expressing interest to import urea fertilizer from Indonesia)," Sudaryono said after receiving a visit from the Australian Ambassador to Indonesia, Roderick Brazier, in Jakarta on Wednesday, April 15, 2026, quoted by Antara.

He explained that the spike in demand is due to disruptions in the global supply chain caused by geopolitical conflicts and disruptions in the major international fertilizer distribution routes.

The deputy minister explained that about a third of the world's fertilizer distribution passes through the Strait of Hormuz, and disruptions in that area have a significant impact on global supply. This situation has led to a sharp increase in global fertilizer prices. The price of urea, which was previously in the range of US$600-700 per ton, has now surged to nearly US$900.
