TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Four Democratic members of the U.S. House of Representatives have called on President Donald Trump to act swiftly to end the war in Gaza by leading renewed negotiations among all parties involved.
Representatives Gregory Meeks, Rosa DeLauro, Jim Himes, and Jamie Raskin sent a letter to Trump on Friday, urging him with “deep sense of urgency and moral responsibility” to push for peace.
“The ongoing war in Gaza has reached a point of profound humanitarian crisis, geopolitical instability, and perilous risk for all involved,” they wrote in the letter, as reported by Anadolu.
“We urged you to use the full weight of American diplomacy to bring about an immediate, just, and durable end to the conflict.”
The lawmakers argued that Israel’s primary military objectives in Gaza “have long since been achieved,” and prolonging the war would only deepen regional instability, increase humanitarian suffering, and endanger both Israeli and Palestinian civilians.
“Now is the time for you to bring all relevant parties - Israel, Palestinian leaders, regional stakeholders, alongside the United States and Special Envoy Steve Witkoff - back to the negotiating table without delay,” they wrote.
They also urged Trump to make securing a permanent ceasefire a central goal of U.S. diplomacy.
“Gaza must be returned to Palestinian civilian control without Hamas, and any plans for the forcible displacement of Palestinians from Gaza must be rejected,” they said.
Meanwhile, ceasefire talks brokered by Qatar, Egypt, and the United States remain stalled. Israel insists on a limited truce in exchange for hostages and demands Hamas’ disarmament, a position supported by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s right-wing coalition.
According to The Times of Israel, members of his government have threatened to withdraw support if a permanent ceasefire is agreed to.
Hamas, in contrast, has offered to release all remaining hostages in exchange for a complete end to the war, while rejecting any disarmament.
Since May, more than 1,300 people have reportedly been killed while trying to access aid.
On Friday alone, now referred to as "Bloody Friday," Israeli attacks killed at least 106 civilians in Gaza, according to local health authorities. The Palestinian Red Crescent Society reported that 12 people died and 90 others were wounded when Israeli forces targeted a group waiting for aid trucks in southwest Gaza City.
Meanwhile, starvation continues to claim lives. By Saturday, August 2, 2025, three children and one adult had died from hunger and malnutrition, raising the death toll from starvation in Gaza to at least 164 people, including 93 children, since October 2023.
