From Papua to IKN, VP Gibran Comments on His Proposed Office Transfers

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Vice President Gibran Rakabuming responds to the request to work in Nusantara Capital City (IKN), East Kalimantan.

The eldest son of former President Joko Widodo said he kept being proposed to work in different places, first in Papua and later in IKN. Nevertheless, he claims to be ready to work at IKN.

"At first I was asked to work from Papua, and now in IKN, it keeps shifting around," he said in a statement from the Presidential Secretariat's Press, Media, and Information Bureau on Monday, July 28, 2025.

The NasDem Party previously asked President Prabowo Subianto to sign the presidential decree to transfer ministries or agencies and the gradual transfer of civil servants to IKN. NasDem proposed that Gibran start working at IKN before the ministries and institutions follow suit.

Gibran claims to be ready to work anywhere, including at IKN, but affirms that it depends on Prabowo's directive. "In Papua, [or] at IKN, we await the president's order. As an aide to the president, one must be ready," he emphasized.

According to Gibran, flexibility in work is a form of his commitment to ensure that government programs run effectively, in line with the President's vision and mission.

"Last week I emphasized that I can work anywhere. Because I am more often on the ground to ensure the smooth execution of the president's vision and mission," he said.

On Friday, July 25, State Secretary Minister Prasetyo Hadi said that Gibran was not planned to move first to IKN, as the IKN Authority focuses on infrastructure development at IKN.

Prasetyo did not provide a definitive answer to the progress of the VP's office at IKN. Prasetyo only said that the IKN Authority is working to complete all the infrastructure. The government targets the construction to conclude within three years.

Once the infrastructure is ready, this Gerindra Party politician said that Prabowo will sign the presidential decree to transfer the nation's capital to IKN. "The IKN Authority is working hard, as requested by the President, to complete it as soon as possible," he said.
