TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - South Korean K-pop superstar G-Dragon has shown empathy toward Hong Kong residents by donating 1 million HK dollars (approximately Rp2.1 billion) to support recovery efforts for victims of the massive fire at the Wong Fuk Court apartment complex in Tai Po.
G-Dragon's Donation for Recovery and Psychological Support
As reported by The Chosun Daily, Galaxy Corporation agency stated that the funds were channeled through the Support Fund for Wang Fuk Court in Tai Po, an official administrative body of the Hong Kong government responsible for distributing donations from all sectors to the fire victims. G-Dragon requested that his donation focus on supporting the firefighters and volunteers involved in the rescue and recovery operations.
According to another report from The Chosun Daily, the donation will also support a psychological recovery program for the affected residents and frontline personnel. Through the Just Peace Foundation, G-Dragon plans to collaborate with local organizations in Hong Kong to provide psychological support and post-disaster healing initiatives. "We aim to convey the message of 'shared recovery'," the foundation stated, as quoted from the media outlet.
Empathy Expressed at MAMA Awards 2025
G-Dragon received the "Best Dance Performance Male Solo" award at the MAMA Awards 2025, held at Kai Tak Stadium. On stage, G-Dragon paid tribute to the victims of the Hong Kong fire. "I don’t know what kind of consolation to offer, but I hope we can all gather strength and move forward," he said, as quoted from The Chosun Daily.
He added in a heavy voice, "I consider this award to be given by my fans, and I will work hard," expressing his gratitude.
That evening, the award ceremony felt different, filled with silence, tribute, and solidarity. G-Dragon appeared in black attire and chose to perform a mellower song as a form of tribute to those in mourning.
Through his donation and touching speech, G-Dragon shows that he interprets music not only as a glamorous stage but also as a means of providing humanitarian care. Amidst the grief enveloping Hong Kong, the global star chose to stand alongside those who are wounded.
