TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - An Israeli cruise ship that was supposed to dock at the island of Crete, Greece, was greeted by demonstrators on Tuesday, July 29, 2025. The protesters called for the end of the Gaza war. This marks the third protest in the Greek islands in the past week.

On the southern Greek Island, activists protested at the port of Agios Nikolaos by unfurling a huge Palestinian flag. As tourists disembarked from the Crown Iris ship and boarded buses for sightseeing, the demonstrators shouted, "Free, free Palestine," according to The Independent.

Riot police kept the crowd away from the cruise ship dock. Clashes broke out between protesters and the police. Local media reported that officers used pepper spray at one point to disperse the crowd. Four people were detained, local media reported.

Video footage shows police leading away a man, his hands cuffed behind his back, as he shouted, "Free, free Palestine."

Two Other Protests in Greece

A similar incident occurred the day before when the Crown Iris docked at a port in the eastern Greek island of Rhodes. Clashes erupted between riot police and demonstrators demanding an end to the war in Gaza. There were no reports of violence as the cruise ship passengers disembarked for a tour around the island.

The previous week, this Israeli ship was also met with protests by residents when it docked at the island of Syros, Greece. Around 150 people chanted slogans and carried banners that read "Stop the Genocide" and "No AC in hell" to stand up for the people of Palestine in Gaza. At that time, about 1,700 cruise ship passengers did not disembark, and the ship left the island earlier than planned.

The company operating the trip, Israel's Mano Cruise, said it had decided to sail to other tourist destinations, considering the situation in the city of Syros. Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar reportedly called Greek Foreign Minister George Gerapetritis over the incident.

Israeli media, Times of Israel, on July 22, 2025, reported that the cruise ship operated by the Israeli shipping giant Mano Maritime was scheduled to dock at the Aegean Island for six hours. However, due to the protests, they were not allowed to disembark.

Greece is a popular tourist destination for Israelis. They often take vacations to the country, either through package tours or by traveling individually, especially during the summer months. In addition to cruise ships, there are several flights every day between Tel Aviv and Athens, as well as direct flights from other Israeli airports to the Greek islands.
