TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - More than 66,000 Palestinians have been killed in what Gaza authorities describe as Israel’s genocide in the enclave, the Ministry of Health in Gaza reported on Sunday, as cited by Al Arabiya.

The death toll continued to climb on Monday, September 29, 2025, after Israeli airstrikes killed at least 40 people, including 10 displaced Palestinians in the Nuseirat refugee camp and 15 others in Gaza City.

According to the ministry’s daily update, fatalities have now reached 66,005, with 168,162 others injured since the Hamas-led attack on Israel on October 7, 2023.

It noted that 79 people were brought to hospitals dead within the past 24 hours. Thousands more are believed to be trapped under rubble.

By comparison, 1,139 people were killed in Israel during the October 7 assault, while about 200 others remain in captivity.

Meanwhile, the Israeli military pressed ahead with its campaign in Gaza as Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu traveled to Washington for a scheduled meeting with US President Donald Trump on Monday.

The offensive has destroyed much of Gaza, displacing around 90 percent of its population and plunging the territory into a dire humanitarian crisis. Experts warn that Gaza City is facing famine due to Israel’s ongoing blockade of aid.

Attacks on Hospitals

The Ministry of Health in Gaza told Al Jazeera on Monday that the al-Shifa Medical Complex in Gaza City remains operationa “despite the difficult current situation and the major challenges facing the health sector”.

Al-Shifa, Gaza’s largest hospital, has repeatedly been targeted and stormed during the war. Earlier, Israeli drones dropped bombs around the facility.

Medical sources told the Wafa news agency that the Israeli army also shelled the Al Helou Hospital in Gaza City, striking it with two artillery rounds. The hospital houses several departments, including the oncology unit and a neonatal ward where 12 premature babies are being treated.

According to Wafa, more than 90 people, including doctors, nurses, and patients, remain trapped inside as Israeli tanks surround the facility, cutting off access in and out.

This latest assault underscores the systematic destruction of Gaza’s healthcare system, which has been besieged, deprived of medical supplies, and repeatedly targeted since the conflict began.
