MICROSOFT will discontinue support for Windows 11 SE, an operating system previously developed to rival ChromeOS. "The company will officially stop software updates, technical assistance, and security fixes in October 2026," reads a statement from Microsoft quoted by Engadget on Saturday, August 2, 2025.
Windows 11 SE was first introduced in 2021 as a lightweight and simple version of the Windows operating system, designed for classroom use. The system was launched alongside the Surface Laptop SE, as part of Microsoft's effort to compete with the dominance of Chromebook and ChromeOS in many schools around the world.
Microsoft's strategy was later considered a failure. Windows 11 SE, available on various affordable devices, turned out to be unable to attract as many users as those captivated by ChromeOS. Microsoft's decision to end support for Windows 11 SE, five years after its launch, proves that the system's target was not achieved.
Windows 11 SE is not Microsoft's first attempt to design a more efficient version of Windows. Previously, the company introduced Windows 10 S-which now exists as "S Mode" in Windows 11. There was also Windows 10X, a lightweight version of Windows for dual-screen devices that ultimately failed to be released to the public.
Although devices with Windows 11 SE can still be used after October 2026, Microsoft recommends users to switch to devices that support other editions of Windows 11. Consumers are inevitably required to switch in order to continue receiving support and security protection.
