House Calls for Deep Review of Indonesia-US Trade Deal

19 hours ago 3

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The House of Representatives (DPR) has urged the government to conduct a thorough review before ratifying the Agreement on Reciprocal Trade (ART) between Indonesia and the United States. House Deputy Chairperson of Commission VI Adisatrya Suryo Sulisto warned that the pact could have far-reaching impacts on public life and the state’s fiscal burden, potentially requiring the amendment of existing laws and the enactment of new ones.

"Even if it is continued, the ratification must be enacted through a law because its impact is so wide," Adisatrya said. He made the remarks during a public hearing held by House Commission VI alongside the Civil Society Coalition for Economic Justice at the Parliament Complex in Senayan, Jakarta, on Monday, July 13, 2026.

Adisatrya emphasized that the government must carefully weigh various aspects before moving forward with the ART ratification. He believes Jakarta must ensure the pact is viable, particularly since the ART faces ongoing legal hurdles in the United States after being annulled by its Supreme Court. Thus, Commission VI intends to delve deeper into the substance of the agreement with the government before taking an official stance.

During the meeting, Olicias Gultom, coordinator of the Civil Society Coalition for Economic Justice, submitted a document outlining their position statement and an inventory of issues regarding the ART to Commission VI. The document is intended to serve as a key reference for the House during its deliberations with the government.

"We are presenting this as an official document to the DPR. There will be the statement we read out earlier, including the list of issues we compiled," Olicias said. He added that the document will be finalized before being submitted to the Commission VI Secretariat, which will then forward it to the Minister of Trade to serve as briefing material for international trade talks.

In response, Adisatrya requested the coalition to restructure the document more systematically to optimize it for government discussions. He assured that Commission VI will closely monitor the progress of the ART deliberations and remain open to further input from civil society groups.

Previously, Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto maintained that the trade pact between Indonesia and the US remains valid as agreed, despite the recent US Supreme Court ruling on global tariff policies.

Airlangga explained that the US Supreme Court decision specifically concerns the annulment of global tariffs and the reimbursement of duties to certain corporations. Meanwhile, the bilateral agreement between Indonesia and the United States operates under its own mechanisms and remains unaffected.
