TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - House of Representatives (DPR) Speaker Puan Maharani has urged the government to evaluate the deployment of Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI) personnel in conflict zones following the deaths of three soldiers on a peacekeeping mission in South Lebanon.

The three casualties were Infantry Major Zulmi Aditya Iskandar, Sergeant Farizal Rhomadhon, and Sergeant Muhammad Nur Ichwan. All of them were granted a one-rank posthumous promotion.

"The government should evaluate the assignment of TNI personnel in conflict areas," the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) politician stated at the Parliament complex in Jakarta on Tuesday, April 21, 2026.

Puan noted that any evaluation of TNI assignments in conflict zones should be grounded in international best practices, including mission clarity, mandate, operational readiness, and the maximization of personnel protection. She asserted that United Nations peacekeeping operations require political readiness, adequate capacity, and a clear understanding of the operational environment.

Furthermore, the DPR called upon the United Nations to conduct a credible investigation into the circumstances surrounding the deaths of the three TNI members in Lebanon. "These efforts are rooted in the core principles of UN peacekeeping missions: transparency, accountability, and respect for international law and human rights," she added.

Separately, the Chairperson of DPR Commission I, Utut Adianto, argued that the government should refrain from withdrawing troops out of respect for the global peace mandate enshrined in the constitution. The PDI-P politician explained that the deployment of peacekeeping forces is not intended for combat; it is for this reason that the Indonesian military participates.

"Once we have committed ourselves, we should not withdraw. It is better to stay because we are fulfilling the preamble [of the constitution], participating in the maintenance of world peace. This includes our support for Palestinian independence," he remarked at the DPR on Tuesday.

Utut suggested that the government provide more intensive on-the-ground guidance to soldiers stationed in conflict areas to prevent further casualties. He expressed hope that such measures would prevent a recurrence of this tragic incident.
