Hundreds of Indonesian Ad Hoc Judges Stage Nationwide Strike Over Allowances

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Hundreds of ad hoc judges who are members of the Forum Silaturahmi Hakim Ad Hoc (FSHA) Indonesia went on strike Monday, January 12, 2026, over demand for an allowance hike.

"The strike has been simultaneously implemented in all work units where ad hoc judges are stationed," said FSHA Coordinator in Indonesia, Ade Darusalam, when contacted by Tempo on Tuesday, January 13, 2026.

Nevertheless, Ade assured that the strike does not deviate from legal corridors and judicial ethics. He said the movement "will not disrupt public services" since ad hoc judges deal only with "special cases."

During the strike, the ad hoc judge group demands for the Supreme Court and the government to expedite the amendment of Presidential Regulation Number 5 of 2013 concerning the Financial Rights and Facilities of Ad Hoc Judges. The ad hoc judges' allowances have so far been regulated under presidential regulations that have remained unchanged for 13 years.

On the other hand, starting in 2025, as outlined in Government Regulation (PP) Number 42 of 2025, allowances for career judges have been raised in varying amounts, ranging from Rp46.7 million to Rp110.5 million per month.

These, however, do not apply for ad hoc judges, which include those dealing with corruption cases, human rights cases, fisheries-related cases, and others.

After years of demanding the amendment to Regulation Number 5 of 2013 and the welfare of ad hoc judges, FSHA has finally called for a national strike movement. Even one judge at the Samarinda Corruption Court, Mahpudin, staged a sudden walkout from a court proceeding on Thursday, January 8, 2026. As a result, the trial could not proceed.

FSHA Indonesia has also previously issued a letter warning of the strike, scheduled for 10 days from January 12 to 21, 2026.
