TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Vice President Gibran Rakabuming Raka has set a target for the National Mosque in the Nusantara Capital City (IKN), East Kalimantan, to be ready for Eid al-Fitr prayers in 2026. Construction of the mosque has reached its final stages, with progress currently at 98.4 percent. The government expects the project to be fully completed by February 15, 2026.
"In the first phase, this mosque will hold around 29,000 worshipers out of a total planned capacity of 60,000. It is targeted to be used for the Eid al-Fitr prayer in 2026," Gibran said during his visit to the site on Saturday, January 3, 2026.
The Vice President emphasized that he would personally oversee the work to ensure the deadline is met without sacrificing quality.
Gibran, the former Solo Mayor, noted that the National Mosque is designed to be more than a place of worship. It is intended "as a symbol of the Islamic identity that encompasses all creatures in the new capital city of Indonesia," he stated. The design reflects a modern approach to religious architecture within the green city framework.
The mosque sits on a 32,125-square-meter plot, which includes a 2,221-square-meter commercial zone and 7,340 square meters for supporting facilities. The total building area spans 76,647 square meters across a four-story structure with two mezzanine floors. The project follows Green Building Principles (BGH), covering everything from structural work to landscape and smart electronic systems.
IKN Authority Head Basuki Hadimuljono accompanied the Vice President during the inspection. Basuki stated that Gibran paid close attention to design quality and progress. He noted that the Vice President appreciated the mosque’s unique concept, which differs from traditional designs in its shape and its physical connection to other religious areas in the new capital.
"The mosque in IKN is shaped like a turban. It is designed to hold 20,000 worshipers in the initial phase, which can later expand to accommodate 60,000," Basuki explained.
Basuki added that Gibran requested the construction team to accelerate their work while maintaining high standards. The goal is to have the mosque functional before the holy month begins. "The hope is that by Ramadan, the mosque can already be used for Tarawih prayers, followed by the Eid al-Fitr prayer," Basuki said.
