TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Minister of State Secretary Prasetyo Hadi ensures Indonesia's commitment to remain in BRICS despite being hit by 32 percent U.S. tariffs. Prasetyo assured that the charge will not turn Indonesia away from the economic bloc.
"We must face the consequence of joining BRICS, whether we like it or not," said Prasetyo at the Parliament Complex, Jakarta, on Wednesday, July 9, 2025.
The Gerindra Party politician said the State Palace had communicated with the Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartanto regarding this issue. The government agreed to continue talks with the U.S. until August 1, 2025, per Trump's newest deadline.
"There is also some room for negotiation. Regarding the plan to reimpose a 10 percent tariff for BRICS members, we feel that it is part of the decision," said Prasetyo.
Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Arif Havas Oegroseno denied that Indonesia's participation in the BRICS group was the cause for Trump's newest levies.
Prabowo's attendance at the summit, he said, had no relation to Trump charging Indonesia with 32 percent tariffs, he said, since countries outside BRICS also face similar issues.
"Many non-BRICS countries are also affected by the tariffs," said Arif on Tuesday, July 8, 2025, adding that Indonesia has made several offers to lower the tariffs. "But I can't disclose the numbers."
President Prabowo Subianto had previously attended the BRICS Summit at the Museum of Modern Art (MAM), Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, on Sunday, July 6, 2025.
Prabowo's presence marked Indonesia's inaugural participation in the BRICS Summit after becoming a full member. Upon arriving at the VVIP lobby of the MAM, President Prabowo was greeted by an honor guard as a form of respect for the attending heads of state.
