Indonesia and Malaysia to Build Schools for Migrant Workers' Children

1 month ago 27

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian Foreign Minister Sugiono announced that the Indonesian and Malaysian governments have agreed to establish Community Learning Centers (CLCs) for Indonesian migrant workers' children residing in the Malayan Peninsula, Sabah, and Sarawak, Malaysia. These alternative schools will provide educational opportunities for these children.

"Children of Indonesian migrant workers can attend school there," Sugiono said at the Merdeka Palace in Central Jakarta on Tuesday, July 29, 2025.

President Prabowo Subianto and Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim held their 13th annual consultation at the Merdeka Palace today. The two-hour meeting covered a range of agreements and discussions.

Key Discussion Points from the Meeting

In addition to the agreement on building CLCs, Sugiono noted that the two heads of state addressed the challenges faced by fishermen in both countries. "There has been a decrease in the number of fishermen's arrests in each region, which was previously a major issue between Indonesia and Malaysia," Sugiono explained.

The meeting also touched upon the conflict between Thailand and Cambodia. Sugiono affirmed Indonesia's readiness to offer any assistance necessary to resolve the dispute between the two Southeast Asian nations. "Indonesia is ready to do anything to achieve a ceasefire," he declared.

Furthermore, Sugiono reported that the leaders agreed to increase the volume and value of bilateral trade. Several unresolved trade issues, deemed barriers to free trade between the two countries, were also discussed, though Sugiono did not provide specific details.

"There are several barriers to trade between the two countries that were requested to be resolved immediately," he said.

Praise for Malaysia's Mediation Efforts

Earlier on Tuesday, July 29, 2025, Prabowo received Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim at the State Palace. Prabowo commended Anwar for his efforts in mediating the conflict between Thailand and Cambodia, attributing the ceasefire between the two Southeast Asian countries to Anwar's leadership.

According to Prabowo, the Indonesian government stands ready to assist the Malaysian government, which chairs the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) in 2025, in resolving various violent conflicts within the region.
