TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia and the United States have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthen and expand their strategic partnership across various fields, from politics and security to trade and investment.

This commitment was conveyed during a bilateral meeting between Indonesian Foreign Minister Sugiono and U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio at the U.S. Department of State in Washington, D.C. on Wednesday, April 16, 2025, according to an official statement from the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The meeting followed up on a telephone conversation between the two ministers in January 2025.

Sugiono is the first ASEAN foreign minister to be received by the U.S. Secretary of State in Washington, D.C.

During the meeting, Sugiono outlined President Prabowo Subianto's Asta Cita priorities and programs, including food and energy security, downstreaming, and human resource development. He emphasized the potential for concrete cooperation with the U.S. government in these areas.

Sugiono also advocated for stronger economic ties, particularly in supply chains. He invited U.S. investors to invest in critical mineral sectors like nickel and other key industries, highlighting Indonesia's deregulation efforts to create a favorable environment for foreign investment.

"The Indonesian government has implemented numerous deregulation measures to streamline processes and cultivate a favorable environment for foreign investors," Sugiono stated.

Mario Rubio acknowledged the timely nature of the meeting and the strengthening bilateral cooperation amid global geopolitical dynamics.

The two ministers also discussed regional and global issues, including the South China Sea and Palestine, underscoring the importance of cooperation and dialogue for regional stability and peace.

Regarding Palestine, Sugiono emphasized President Prabowo's active role in promoting peace, citing his visits to Egypt, Jordan, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, and Turkey.

"The Indonesian government is also prepared to temporarily evacuate approximately 1,000 injured Palestinians from the Gaza Strip to receive medical treatment in Indonesia. Following their treatment, they will be repatriated to Gaza," he said.

He also stated Indonesia's readiness to temporarily evacuate approximately 1,000 injured Palestinians from Gaza for medical treatment, with the intention of their eventual repatriation. Sugiono reiterated Indonesia's rejection of the forced relocation of Palestinians.

Foreign Minister Sugiono's visit to the United States occurred shortly after U.S. President Donald Trump imposed a 32 percent import tariff on Indonesian products entering the U.S. on April 2. However, this policy was subsequently postponed for a period of 90 days on April 9.
