TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed that there were no Indonesian citizens among the hundreds of foreign tourists who died or went missing due to the devastating flash floods on the China-Nepal border on Wednesday.
Director for the Protection of Indonesian Citizens, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Heni Hamidah, said that the Indonesian Embassy in Dhaka and Beijing continue to monitor the conditions of Indonesian citizens in Nepal and Tibet. They are doing so by coordinating with the Indonesian citizen network and the Indonesian Honorary Consul in Kathmandu following the disaster.
"To date, based on monitoring and communication with relevant parties, there have been no reports of Indonesian citizens being affected," Heni said on Thursday, as quoted by ANTARA.
The Indonesian Embassy in Dhaka is paying special attention to Indonesian tourists currently in Nepal, especially those planning to go hiking.
For this reason, the embassy has issued an appeal to all travel agents sending Indonesian citizens to Nepal to immediately provide information regarding the whereabouts and condition of the Indonesian citizens they guide, especially those who are traveling or climbing, said Heni.
Currently, 45 Indonesian citizens are registered as residing in Nepal. Most of them reside in Kathmandu and work in the hospitality sector, he added.
After the disaster, the Indonesian embassies in Dhaka and Beijing urged all Indonesian citizens to be more vigilant, follow local authorities' directions, avoid affected areas, and monitor information from official sources.
"The Indonesian Embassy in Beijing and the Indonesian Embassy in Dhaka will continue to monitor developments in the situation and maintain communication with the Indonesian citizen community," said the Director for the Protection of Indonesian Citizens.
In an emergency, Indonesian citizens in Nepal can contact the Indonesian Embassy in Dhaka hotline at +880 161-4444-552, while Indonesian citizens in China can contact the Indonesian Embassy in Beijing hotline at +8618610455488.
According to a Kyodo report, the death toll from devastating flash floods on the Nepal-China border has risen to 160, with hundreds more still missing. Nepalese authorities noted that of the 384 missing people, 290 were foreign tourists from India, Malaysia, Japan, the UK and the U.S.
The Bhotekoshi River in Rasuwa, a mountainous region of Nepal, suddenly overflowed its banks, turning into a flash flood that destroyed homes, buildings, and a hydroelectric power plant.
Meanwhile, China's Xinhua news agency reported that three people were killed and 265 others were missing following a mudslide in Shigatse, a major city in the Tibet Autonomous Region. The river overflows from China into Nepal.
