TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia's Ministry of Tourism predicts that the number of foreign and domestic tourists during the Christmas and New Year holidays in 2026 will increase. Tourism Minister Widiyanti Putri Wardhana said that several promotional packages and incentives are already in place, including discounts on transportation fares.

"For the Christmas and New Year period in 2025/2026, we project an increase in foreign tourist visits in December 2025, with an estimated 1.36 million foreign tourists and an estimated more than 120 million domestic tourist trips," she said during a virtual meeting with several ministries and institutions on Monday, December 1, 2025.

Widiyanti explained that a total of 1,360,356 foreign tourists are expected in December 2025. This projection represents an increase of 10.72 percent or 131,867 additional tourists compared to the December 2024 period.

Furthermore, the number of domestic tourists is projected to reach 120,631,647 trips in December 2025. This projection also represents an increase of 19.34 percent or 19,546,757 trips compared to the December 2024 period.

Additionally, Widiyanti mentioned that during the same period last year, there were 225.86 million movements, with 94.67 million people traveling within and between provinces throughout Indonesia. This data is based on records from the Ministry of Transportation from December 18 to January 8, 2025.

"This year we anticipate a similar movement pattern," she said.

The most visited tourist destinations from year to year are predominantly beaches, lakes, and the sea at 58.6 percent. This is followed by culinary centers at 54.8 percent, mountains or hills at 50 percent, zoos at 33.9 percent, and tourist villages at 28.4 percent.

To increase visits, the Ministry of Tourism is preparing transportation discounts, including discounted airplane, train, and ferry tickets. There are also 65 Christmas and New Year tour packages from 23 industry partners covering priority destinations. The Ministry of Tourism is also promoting tourism through exhibitions and various tourism forums.

"These packages are expected to be an attractive option for tourists and to stimulate the local economy in various regions," Widiyanti stated.
