TEMPO.CO, Jakarta Indonesia has been elected as a member of the UNESCO Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage for the 2026–2030 period, the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs said, after winning a vote in Paris.

As quoted by ANTARA, in a press statement on Thursday, the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs said that Indonesia was elected to the 11th General Assembly of States Parties to the 2003 UNESCO Convention in Paris. It represented Group IV of the Asia-Pacific region, alongside Japan, the Philippines, and Cambodia, out of six candidates.

Indonesian Ambassador to France and Permanent Delegate to UNESCO, Mohamad Oemar, said the victory was a major mandate that would be carried out with full responsibility.

He emphasized that Indonesia is committed to overseeing global cultural protection policies, strengthening the implementation of the 2003 Convention, and increasing the capacity of local communities during the 2026–2030 period.

The Indonesian Deputy Permanent Delegate to UNESCO, I Gusti Agung Ketut Satrya Wibawa, said his position on the committee would be used to champion the interests of developing countries in preserving cultural heritage.

The UNESCO Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage is a body consisting of 24 of the 185 member states that are parties to the 2003 Convention governing the protection of global intangible cultural heritage.

The committee is responsible for evaluating and adding cultural elements to the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage List, as well as developing international policy guidelines for cultural preservation.

Through this membership, Indonesia is committed to preserving its cultural heritage and contributing as a pillar of global solidarity, peace, and sustainable development.

The Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that this success was the result of the Indonesian delegation's intensive diplomacy in Paris and Jakarta, as well as the efforts of various other representatives, all supported by several friendly countries.

This international recognition reflects Indonesia's commitment to preserving culture sustainably at the global level, the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs said.
