TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – Indonesia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said it continues to closely monitor the security situation in Iran and the condition of Indonesian citizens as protests spread across the country.
In a statement issued on Monday and cited by Antara, the ministry said Indonesian citizens in several parts of Iran, particularly in the cities of Qom and Isfahan, have reported no major security disruptions so far.
Most Indonesians currently residing in Iran are students, with a large concentration in Qom, a major center of Islamic studies.
The Indonesian Embassy in Tehran has assessed that an evacuation is not yet necessary. However, the embassy said it has begun preparedness measures in line with existing contingency plans should the situation escalate.
The ministry urged all Indonesian citizens in Iran to remain vigilant, follow updates from official sources, avoid protest sites and large public gatherings, and maintain regular communication with the embassy.
Indonesians planning to travel to Iran have also been advised to postpone their trips until the security situation improves.
In case of emergency, Indonesian citizens can contact the Indonesian Embassy in Tehran at +98 991 466 8845 or +98 902 466 8889, or reach the Directorate for the Protection of Indonesian Citizens at the Foreign Ministry at +62 812-9007-0027.
Protests Escalate Amid Economic Crisis
The unrest in Iran began in late December after the national currency sharply depreciated following years of economic pressure and sanctions imposed by the United States and its Western allies.
The currency crisis triggered widespread protests over soaring prices, inflation, and declining living standards.
The demonstrations have since evolved into broader political protests targeting the government. They are the largest since the nationwide protest movement of 2022 and 2023, which erupted after the death of Mahsa Amini, a 22-year-old Kurdish woman detained by Iran’s morality police for allegedly violating dress regulations.
Iranian authorities called for a nationwide counter-demonstration on Monday, January 12, 2026, to condemn what state media described as terrorist acts led by the United States and Israel.
Authorities also declared three days of national mourning on Sunday "to honor the martyrs who fell in the resistance against the United States and the Zionist regime," according to government media.
International Concern
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said on Sunday he was shocked by reports of violence against protesters and urged Iranian authorities to exercise restraint.
Iran’s Interior Ministry has claimed the unrest is subsiding. However, the country’s attorney general has warned that demonstrators could face severe penalties, including the death sentence.
Meanwhile, monitoring groups reported that a nationwide internet shutdown has lasted for more than 60 hours, further limiting access to information as the situation remains volatile.
