TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia kicked off basic military training for a total of 1,773 civil servants from 49 ministries and agencies today, Wednesday, April 22, at Halim Perdanakusuma Airbase in East Jakarta.
Head of the National Reserve Agency of the Ministry of Defense, Lieutenant General Gabriel Lema, said the civil servants, known as ASN, who participated in the training have undergone physical, psychological, and ideological selection tests.
The government employees will receive basic military training before officially being designated as military reserve (Komcad) on June 5, 2026.
"The military reserve component established from ministry and state agency civil servants is part of the tangible efforts to bolster national defense," said Gabriel after the launch of the training activity.
According to Gabriel, the initial participants of the basic training amounted to 2,019 civil servants, but a rigorous selection process brought down the number to 1,773 eligible participants.
Subsequently, the eligible civil servants will participate in military training at six different educational institutions for 45 days.
Among them, 257 civil servants will be placed in the National Defense Training Center in Bogor, West Java; 222 in the East Jakarta Main Regiments of Military Area Commands; 453 in the Army Health Education Center; 1,280 in the 1st Marine Forces Brigade; 270 in the Language Center at the Air Force Education and Training Command; and 291 at Wingdik 500 Ayang Sanjaya Education Center.
During the military training, Gabriel said the participants will receive education that is oriented in fostering solidarity, compassion, and discipline. He claimed that the reserve components aim to ensure the maintenance and well-preservation of the national defense.
According to Gabriel, the changing and increasingly complex global, regional, and national strategic situations present unpredictable and formidable threats. On the other hand, Indonesia, as an extensive archipelagic nation, holds a highly strategic position in terms of geopolitics, geostrategy, and geoeconomics.
"This condition demands a well-planned and integrated national defense strategy through an active defense strategy through layered security," he said.
During the launch of the military training, the civil servants appeared in unison wearing camouflage uniforms and military gear. They stood in formation on the field to receive directives from the Ministry of Defense leadership. At the end, they chanted slogans accompanied by distinct military-like foot stomping and body movements.
