Indonesia Responds to Trump's Tariff Threat on BRICS Nations

2 months ago 42

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian government has responded to U.S. President Donald Trump's threat to the member countries of the BRICS economic bloc.

On Sunday, July 6, 2025, Trump pledged to impose an additional 10 percent tariff on any country that supports the BRICS group, accusing it of having anti-American policies.

Trump's statement came as the leaders of the BRICS countries, including Indonesia, gathered in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, to attend their annual summit.

Deputy Foreign Minister Arrmanatha Nasir said the BRICS Summit is not meant to oppose the United States or any other party. According to Tata—Arrmanatha's nickname—the BRICS meeting aims to unite developing countries in addressing various challenges.

"There is no measure taken to oppose another nation, or another group of states," said Tata in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, on July 7, 2025, in his official statement.

According to the deputy minister, the BRICS Summit discussed various global issues, including multilateralism, health, and the environment.

"And no issues discussed that contradict the interests of developing countries or oppose another nation," he said, adding that the summit did not discuss Trump's remark, which coincided with the first day of the BRICS meetings.

"We cannot control what the President of the United States or other heads of state are saying. Put an emphasis on that, because some things were not appropriate to be discussed within BRICS," he said.

On the first day of the BRICS summit, Donald Trump threatened a 10 percent tariff on member countries of BRICS.

"There will be no exceptions to this policy," Trump wrote on his social media platform, Truth Social, on Sunday, July 6, 2025.

In a separate post, Trump announced that he would begin sending tariff letters to various countries around the world on Monday, July 7.

This is not the first time Trump has threatened member countries of the BRICS. In late January, Trump stated that there was no opportunity for BRICS to replace the U.S. dollar in international trade.

Trump also called for BRICS nations to avoid creating new currencies or supporting other currencies as U.S. dollar substitutes, lest they be subject to 100 percent tariffs.
