TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia's Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) Bahlil Lahadalia has called on Shell gas stations not to lay off employees despite recent fuel stock shortages at several private gas stations.
“I have asked them not to take any additional actions. We want everything to be peaceful, but it’s also important to remember that managing this country comes with rules,” Bahlil said on Friday in Jakarta.
He expressed confidence that private gas stations will act responsibly. “I am sure they also have a good heart,” he added.
During the discussion, Bahlil also urged Pertamina to enhance its service quality to remain competitive with private gas stations.
“I have asked Mr. Simon [President Director of Pertamina] to improve service quality and overall standards, so Pertamina can compete effectively with other private entities,” he said.
Previously, Ingrid Siburian, President Director & Managing Director of Mobility Shell Indonesia, confirmed that Shell had adjusted operations at its stations due to challenges in fuel supply.
“We have made adjustments in operational activities across our Shell station network, as gasoline products are not fully available,” Ingrid told Antara on Tuesday, September 16, 2025.
The operational adjustments included changes in working hours, fewer workdays, and temporary furloughs for employees. These measures were in response to shortages of gasoline fuels at some stations.
Regarding reports of station closures, Ingrid clarified that Shell stations continue to serve the public with available fuels, including Shell V-Power Diesel, while still providing Shell Recharge, workshops, Shell Select, and Shell lubricants.
At Friday’s press conference, Bahlil confirmed that private gas stations have agreed to purchase additional fuel through an import scheme in collaboration with Pertamina.
“They agreed, and indeed had to agree, to purchase and collaborate with Pertamina,” he said.
Under this agreement, private gas stations proposed several conditions, including that the imported fuel be pure fuel base to be blended at individual stations, conducting joint surveys for fuel purchases, and ensuring transparency in fuel pricing.
