TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian government has spent approximately Rp25 billion (around US$1.6 million) on handling the recent floods and landslides in Sumatra. The costs cover the evacuation of victims and logistical assistance for affected communities up to the seventh day of the disaster, Tuesday, December 2, 2025.
Minister of Social Affairs Saifullah Yusuf, also known as Gus Ipul, said more than 509 emergency response personnel have been deployed to assist with evacuations and in community kitchens.
“The total value of the assistance has nearly reached Rp25 billion,” he stated during a press briefing at the Ministry of Social Affairs in Jakarta on Tuesday.
Gus Ipul explained that the government’s immediate priority is to evacuate victims and ensure the basic needs of survivors, particularly food and essential supplies. Thirty public kitchens have been set up across affected districts and cities, providing meals for around 800,000 residents.
“We have been operating these kitchens since the beginning of the disaster and will continue as long as needed,” he said.
However, some residents remain isolated and have not yet received aid due to blocked access routes. The minister said efforts are ongoing to reach all affected communities in Aceh, North Sumatra, and West Sumatra.
“Some areas have difficult terrain, and some residents are still isolated. We are working to deliver aid to these locations today,” he added.
The disaster, which struck at least three provinces simultaneously on November 25, 2025, has caused significant casualties and damage.
According to the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB), as of Monday night, December 1, 2025, the floods and landslides have claimed 604 lives: 151 in Aceh, 165 in West Sumatra, and 283 in North Sumatra.
In addition, 464 people remain missing, 2,600 have been injured, and approximately 1.5 million people have been affected. Some 570,700 residents have been displaced.
The disaster has also damaged infrastructure, including 3,500 heavily damaged houses, 4,100 moderately damaged homes, 20,500 lightly damaged houses, 282 educational facilities, and 271 bridges across 50 districts.
The government continues to coordinate emergency relief and recovery efforts, aiming to provide support to all affected communities in Sumatra.
